How does kinesiology work?
Kinesiology is an “energetic treatment”, which means that it balances our “subtle energy”. When we are balanced we feel happy and well but many things can cause us to be out of balance and therefore experience pain, discomfort, fear, lack of confidence, indecision, etc.

By muscle testing, Kinesiology can determine what is causing the imbalance and offer solutions to rebalance the energy and therefore restore us to health and well being.

What is subtle energy?
When we discuss complementary medicine we should think in terms of quantum physics rather than chemistry and biology. Although, of course, chemistry and biology are involved.

Everything in the Universe is made of atoms which vibrate, or have a frequency. The idea that something is vibrating usually leads us to think of something physically shaking but sound waves, for instance, are a form of vibrational energy, as is sunlight, infra red, ultra violet. The vibrational spectrum consists of many different expressions of the same thing which includes microwaves, television broadcasts, X-rays and radio waves. The vibrational energy which forms these expressions is the same energy which is in every cell in our bodies – it just vibrates at a different frequency.

Albert Einstein came to the revolutionary conclusion that energy and matter were actually different forms of the same thing in E = mc2.

The vibrational energy we hold in each cell, in the channels in our body (called meridians) and in the energy centres (called chakras) is simply the vibrational energy in a different forms.

Another name for it is “subtle energy”.

Eastern civilisations have known about this energy for many thousands of years. In China, it is called “Chi”, in Japan “Ki”, in India “Prana”. In the West we have no such easy simple word. “Subtle energy” is the closest we can get.

What kind of “solutions” can be found in Kinesiology?
Very often radical improvements can be experienced after doing seemingly simple things. It may be a change in nutrition, the rubbing of an acupressure/puncture point, taking a natural remedy, repeating an affirmation or doing a specific exercise or movement. Most of the “corrections” in Kinesiology are straightforward and simple. Some can be quite involved but none of them are particularly difficult and certainly not painful. The beauty of Kinesiology is its simplicity.

What kinds of things cause us to be out of balance?
Any stress will have an imbalancing effect on the body’s subtle energy. The level of imbalance will depend on the intensity of the stress. The factors causing stress form an endless list but some are listed below:

    Physical:
  • Food allergies or intolerances (toxicity)
  • Exposure to chemicals or food additives
  • Generally poor nutrition
  • A fall or tripping
  • Poor posture
  • Smoking
  • Drugs
    Emotional/Mental:
  • Fear
  • Hate
  • Envy/Jealousy
  • Past trauma
  • Subconscious negative beliefs
  • Anxiety or worry
  • Witnessing something distressing such as an accident
  • Indecision
  • Regret
  • Grief or loss
  • Lack of confidence or feeling unsure of ourselves
    Environmental:
  • Chemicals and inhalents
  • Pollens

What “corrections” would you use to help me?
All of the healing techniques used in my practice are natural, safe, non-habit forming, gentle and non-invasive. Kinesiology is eclectic and draws on many disciplines and techniques. There are acupressure/puncture points on the body which can be tapped or rubbed and points on the head which are gently held.

Dr Edward Bach created the wonderful Bach Flower Remedies which use the beautiful healing energy of plants and flowers to rebalance our energy and these are very often used in Kinesiology treatment – known as a “balance” or “defusion”.

A great benefit to health is balanced nutrition and many symptoms can be helped by either changing the diet or using nutritional supplements. The current optimum nutrition and supplement programme can be easily established with muscle testing.

The electromagnetic energy held in each cell in our bodies has a vibration – we are vibrational beings. When this vibration is out of balance it can be balanced by another vibration. This can be the Bach Flower Remedies as above, sound such as music or a single musical note, or even colour. It’s like singing in harmony.

The colours of the rainbow are different because the light in each colour is vibrating at a different frequency. Kinesiology can establish which frequency would be most appropriate to help a given problem. Colour healing is a therapy in its own right.

What is a muscle test?
In order for us to move around our muscles move our skeleton. A muscle can only move a bone by pulling it, it cannot push.

Say you want to lift a weight at the gym to perform a “biceps curl”, the bicep muscle must contract “switch on” to pull the bones in your forearm upwards. To put the weight back down again the bicep muscle must “switch off” and extend whilst allowing its partner (the tricep muscle) to contract and pull the arm back down again.

This “switching off” action also happens in relation to stress and can be utilised to show us the things which stress us and therefore cause an imbalance in our subtle energy.

How do you test muscles?
During a treatment session you will lay, fully clothed, on a treatment couch. I will ask you to hold your arm or leg in a specific position. I will then apply a gentle pressure (about 2 lbs) to your arm or leg for about 2 seconds. If the muscle locks it shows balanced energy, if it unlocks it shows under energy.

This process does not require strength. If the muscle holds in its optimum position (the test position) then the testee will find the process easy. I have seen people demonstrating what they call kinesiology and asking the testee to resist them whilst they apply a lot of pressure to push the limb down – seemingly overcoming the testee. This method is often used to ‘demonstrate the effectiveness’ of products such as magnetic insoles.

To test a muscle and therefore gain information about a person is, I believe, a priviledge and a process which should be respectful to the testee (client). If the muscle holds, the pressure need only be very light and the ‘holding’ effortless. The treatment should be relaxing and gentle.

Do I need to bring anything to treatment?
It is helpful if you bring your supplements and natural remedies with you. I also, sometimes, ask people to keep a food diary for a couple of weeks before seeing me.

However, the most important thing you can bring is an open mind and a desire to gain more information about your health and wellbeing.

Kinesiology is no different from any other therapy or in fact allopathic medicine, in that if you really believe that it won’t work, then it probably won’t. To receive healing you need an open mind and an open heart.

Many people dismiss the healing effects of complementary health by referring to the placebo effect. I find this insulting to my clients who have gained insights, made changes and returned to me to report amazing improvements in their health and wellbeing.

The power of the mind, or “placebo effect” is a fantastic healing tool, available to all of us, which should be revered and honoured – not dismissed.

You don’t have to believe in it to benefit from it, but it certainly helps.

If complementary health was purely a placebo then neither animals nor babies who have no cognitive knowledge of the healing they receive, would respond positively – which they certainly do.

How long will it take for me to see a change or get better?
Everyone has a personal journey and process in healing and it’s therefore impossible to say until I have completed the initial consultation.

At the end of the initial session I always determine how many sessions you will need and how long it will be to see a change. Some people experience immediate benefits and for others the process is longer and dependent on more than one session.

We tend to think that “big problems” need “big solutions” but this is not always the case. I have treated many people who have had long term issues – sometimes quite debilitating – who have had positive responses and total healing in one or two sessions.

On the other hand I have also treated people with “simple” symptoms who I thought would need only a few sessions - only to uncover a deeper problem as we worked together.

Do you just do physical stuff?
No – my work is very varied and determined by my clients. A physical problem can very often have an emotional or mental cause. My training is in holistic treatment – so body, mind and spirit. I do have particular interest in the psychoneuroimmunological aspects of healing which is why I took a four year post graduate course at Spectrum Centre for Humanistic Psychology and trained as a Bach Flower Practitioner using counselling with the support of remedies.

Do you have any particular interest in one area?
I am very interested in working with people who need to transform a block of any kind. I changed my career at the age of 41 and found kinesiology and the remedies invaluable in diminishing fear and keeping me on track to meet my goals.

One of the particular transformations I am experiencing is menopause and I am passionate that it need not be a time of lack and distress. It is a particular area of work for me at present.

What is psychoneuroimmunology?
It is the effect that our thoughts, beliefs and attitudes have on our body.

Take a moment now to close your eyes and think of something you dislike. Notice how you feel inside your body. Then think of something you really enjoy. Notice how the feeling in your body changes. Our thoughts and emotions do affect our body.

A significant degree of our healing is in the belief that we can be well – or have what we want in life. If we believe it we can attract it to us. If you don’t think this is possible, try this exercise:

Every day sit down for five minutes and imagine you have a serious illness. When I ask this most people respond by saying “No, I’m not going to do that.” When I ask why they say, “Because I will get ill.”

When I ask people whether they believe they could be well by sitting down every day and imagine themselves well, happy and with everything they want in the world, the same people say, “No.” When I ask why they tell me that it wouldn’t work.

Why is it that they can “think themselves ill” but not “think themselves well”? Think about your response to those two propositions.

Please do not do the above exercise of thinking yourself ill – I use this to illustrate a point and do not want you to try it in any way.

Of course many people will use the term “placebo effect” to describe psychoneuroimmunology which is actually inaccurate and disparaging.

Usually “placebo effect” is used to describe the response in scientific experiments – when a group of people are given a medicine and another group (the control) believe they are given the medicine and still respond positively. The non-medicine (say a sugar pill) is called the “placebo”.

Will the treatment cause me discomfort?
Some of the acupressure points rubbed or tapped in a treatment can be felt as “ouchy” or tender but the objective is to reduce pain not inflict it!

How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, I will give you this information at the end of the initial session.

Why do I need to come for a longer session the first time?
The additional time allows you time to give me all the information you feel is relevant.

Will the treatment interfere with my medication?
There are some supplements and minerals which should be avoided with certain medication – vitamin E and statins for instance. The treatment however is completely safe and will not affect you medication in any way.

The Bach Flower Remedies are homeopathically produced – can I have peppermint with them?
Although the remedies are homeopathically produced, they are not antidoted by peppermint, strong flavours or coffee. So yes these foods can be eaten whilst taking the remedies.

Do doctors recommend you?
It has happened, but sadly it is rare. I’m sad to say that most doctors do not fully understand what I do, or in fact, believe that what I do is effective.

I do encourage my clients to talk to their GPs – especially if their improvement results in a reduction in medication. It’s my dream that one day we will all work together co-operatively to give our clients/patients the very best support we can offer.

I welcome any approach from medics with a view to co-operation.

I’ve heard that you can identify allergies, but also get rid of them, is that true?
Yes, kinesiology is unique in this respect. In 99% of cases I can cure an allergy – forever. The process is straightforward and painless.

Is there an age limit to the people you can treat?
No. I work with all ages from babies to the elderly.

Are kinesiology or Bach Flower Remedies safe if I am pregnant?
Yes. Because kinesiology literally asks the body what it needs we will only do things that are safe and appropriate. Many people find kinesiology of great help during pregnancy for stopping morning sickness. Of course any treatment undertaken will benefit the baby too!

Bach Flower Remedies are completely safe, natural and non-addictive. They are preserved in alcohol but the amounts are so small as not to raise problems. Any persons with alcohol issues would be best advised not to take them. I am currently researching alcohol free alternatives for use with such clients.

Is there anything you can’t treat?
In theory all problems/situations could benefit from treatment even if only from giving a new perspective or having time to concentrate on oneself. My specialisation is in allergy identification and treatment and I have a special interest in the emotional aspect/cause of illness.

I have many trusted colleagues to whom I will refer particular conditions such as skeletal problems if I cannot help. The beauty of kinesiology is that I can muscle test to find the most appropriate therapy and even the best therapist to suit the condition or the person.

The best thing is to come in for a free 15 minute chat and I can advise you.

I have heard that I have to drink lots of water when seeing you, why?
The body is about 75% water and the brain about 85%! I am working to balance your subtle energy in order to achieve health and wellness. The subtle energy is electromagnetic energy and this energy travels through the moisture in your body. If you are dehydrated you won’t function well and your body will find it difficult to make the changes necessary to heal.

Water, of course, is fundamental to our existence and a lack of it will have a detrimental affect on your functioning.

What is your view of orthodox medicine?
There are situations where orthodox medicine excels. Sometimes though, complementary medicine has a safer, easier and more effective approach. I have cured symptoms which have escaped the medical profession because I look at situations from a different point to view. There is a place for both orthodox and complementary to work together and it is my dream that one day this will happen to the benefit of everyone.

If I come to see you for counselling will it be confidential?
Absolutely. It is of paramount importance to me that my clients can trust me. Everything I know about you is treated as highly confidential.

Is there any support between treatments?
Yes. I give Bach Flower Remedies and/or physical exercises to support my clients between sessions. I believe it is important to teach you how to look after yourself and so will always explain remedies or techniques so that you can call upon them without asking me if you need to – self help is very empowering.

Will I have to do anything between appointments?
Yes. People are sometimes surprised that I give practical advice as well as treatment. There are certain things that only you can do to heal or be healthier – such as drinking more water, eating more fibre, going swimming, walking 20 minutes a day or spending more time relaxing. I always give very clear instructions.
